Work with what you have and are comfortable with. This is a class that will give you key concepts to use with any medium.
As a guide, our first exercises will be in value only, so use black and white and mix your greys. Stay with 5 values at the most . Anyone who is color shy, work with the Zorn palette, a limited palette of cad red light, yellow ochre and black and white. This combination of colors will allow you to mix skin tones for every type of skin. More experienced artists can use their full palette. I like working with the split primaries and a few neutrals for convenience.
You will also need brushes, paper towels, your solvent, and several 9x12, 8x10 or 11x14 sheets of canvas or panels or pads for exercises, a palette for mixing and an easel or board to work on. Also, for the last session have a photo of someone you want to paint a portrait of, or you can work from what I will have available.
